In Part 1 of this series, we explored Shutting Out the Noise during transition. We looked at recognizing and reducing the external advice, expectations, and internal doubts that make it hard to hear your own voice during times of change.
But quieting the noise is only the first step. Once you create space for your own thoughts, the real question is: How do you actually hear what your own inner wisdom is saying?
This post is about Accessing Your Inner Wisdom. Listening deeply to yourself to uncover what truly matters to you. What you need. Where you want to go next.
It’s about moving beyond all the “shoulds” to rediscover the clarity that’s uniquely yours.
✨Why Accessing Your Inner Wisdom Matters
Transitions often bring a mix of emotions. It brings uncertainty, self-doubt, and even excitement. In the middle of all this, your inner wisdom is a steady guide, helping you make choices that align with your values and goals.
The challenge is learning how to connect with it, especially when the path ahead feels unclear.
🧐 The Age of Experts
Trusting your own wisdom isn’t easy in today’s world. We’re constantly bombarded with the message that someone else has the answer.
Everywhere you look, there’s another promise of “five easy steps” to fix anything or become anyone. Eat this, listen to that, walk this way, talk this way—each expert offers a formula that guarantees success if you just follow their path.
In a culture overflowing with advice, it’s easy to start questioning whether you could possibly have any answers at all. If everyone else seems so certain, so credentialed, so persuasive, how can your quiet and undeveloped insight measure up?
This type of environment trains us to outsource our decision-making. It teaches us to distrust our own instincts and defer to other people’s solutions. Even when those solutions don’t fit our values, goals, or unique circumstances.
That’s why accessing your inner wisdom is such important and challenging work. It means deliberately turning down the volume on the world’s ready-made answers so you can hear your own.
Author and poet David Whyte writes in The Three Marriages that our lives are shaped by three equally essential "marriages":
1️⃣ The marriage with another (our intimate relationships)
2️⃣ The marriage with work (our vocation or calling)
3️⃣ The marriage with ourselves (our inner life, sense of self)
Whyte argues that true fulfillment requires tending to all three—but especially the marriage with ourselves, which is often neglected in modern life.
He suggests that to live a meaningful, integrated life, we must “inhabit” a marriage with ourselves—one built not on others’ expectations but on our own neglected voice.
🔍 The Value of Finding Your Own Answer
One of the most common questions I hear in coaching is:
“I don’t know—what do you think I should do?”
“What would you do in my situation?”
It’s a natural impulse. We all want certainty. We want someone to tell us the “right” answer.
There are times in coaching when it can be genuinely helpful to offer an observation, share a perspective, or help a client access resources they might not know about. But even then, the best answer is always the one the client finds within themselves.
That’s because it’s the answer that’s right for them—reflecting their own values, goals, and needs. It’s the answer they will be willing to stand behind and live with, even if they need to adjust it later as new information emerges.
The truth is, there isn’t a single, static “right” answer for life’s transitions. There’s the answer you choose for this moment, knowing you may revise it as you grow. The journey of listening inward and making your own choices is what creates meaningful, authentic change.
⏭️How to Begin Accessing Your Inner Wisdom
Simple Strategies to Get Started
Even though no one knows you better than you do, accessing that inner clarity often takes intentional effort.
Here are some simple ways to start:
✅Pause to Reflect
Step away from external input and sit quietly with your thoughts. Just a few minutes of daily reflection can create space for your own voice to emerge.
✅Focus on What Truly Matters
Ask yourself: What do I want to prioritize in this transition? Write down a few key themes or ideas that resonate with you.
✅Look Back to Move Forward
Recall a time you successfully navigated change. What did you do well? How did you stay true to yourself?
These small steps can help you begin to access your inner wisdom. For deeper exploration, having a trusted partner can be invaluable.
