VALIDATE: Path to Progress in Workplace Transition Coaching

A person standing at the beginning of a winding path that rises upward into an arrow, representing the progress, reflection, and forward momentum of the VALIDATE phase in workplace transition coaching.
VALIDATE isn't about arriving — it's about confirming you're still moving in the right direction. The final phase of the ACTIV™ framework helps you reflect, celebrate, and adjust with clarity.

You've Been Moving With Intention. Now It's Time to Look Up

You've taken this seriously.

You slowed down long enough to understand what matters. You made a decision rooted in your values. You designed a path that fit your real life. And then, you acted. Not just moved, but moved with intention, taking steps aligned with your plan and your purpose.

And somewhere in that intentional action, something has shifted — in your circumstances, your understanding, or your sense of what's working and what isn't.

VALIDATE is the phase where you pause long enough to ask the question that makes all of that action meaningful: Is this still the right path for me?

As an act of ownership, not as a sign of doubt.

Because the most important thing about a workplace transition isn’t just that you acted, it’s that your actions continue to reflect who you are and what you’re building toward. VALIDATE is how you confirm that alignment, celebrate what’s working, and adjust with confidence when something needs to change.

Growth Becomes Sustainable When You Learn From Experience

There's a cultural story we tell about transitions: that success means staying the course. That changing direction is a sign something went wrong. That the original plan was either right or it was a failure.

That story is rarely true and it may not be true for you.

Real growth, the kind that's sustainable and leads somewhere meaningful, doesn't happen in a straight line. It happens through intentional action, reflection, and honest adjustment. It happens through noticing what experience is teaching you. Noticing what time, circumstance, and lived reality reveal that planning alone cannot. And being willing to act on that, even when it means revising what you thought you knew.

VALIDATE is built on a different story: that course correction is not failure. It's wisdom in motion. Every time you learn from experience and adjust your direction, you haven't failed — you've reached a milestone. One far more significant than any career achievement. A life milestone.

The question isn't whether your path will need to be refined. It likely will. The question is whether you'll have the clarity and the courage to refine it intentionally. Changing direction after investing significant time, energy, and resources is genuinely difficult. It asks something real of you. But staying on a path that no longer fits tends to cost far more in the long run. VALIDATE creates the space to make that assessment honestly, before the cost compounds.

ACTIV™: A Framework for Workplace Transitions

The ACTIV™ model supports individuals, leaders, and organizations through change with clarity and purpose. It includes five phases:

  • ACCESS – Surface your values, motivations, and deeper goals to uncover what truly matters.

  • CHOOSE – Make intentional decisions that reflect who you are and where you want to go.

  • TAILOR – Shape a path that fits your unique strengths and circumstances.

  • IMPLEMENT – Take action with clarity and confidence, putting your chosen path into action.

  • VALIDATE – Reflect on progress, celebrate wins, and refine the plan to stay aligned with your goals.

Every ACTIV™ phase builds on the last. VALIDATE is where the full arc of the framework comes into focus and where the foundation for what comes next is laid.

What Is Working, What Has Changed, and What Have You Learned?

These are the three questions at the heart of VALIDATE and they're worth sitting with.

What is working invites honest acknowledgment of real progress. Not just the big milestones, but the smaller ones that often go unrecognized: a boundary set with clarity, a conversation navigated with confidence, a decision made from values rather than fear. These moments are evidence of growth, even when the larger destination hasn't yet come into view.

What has changed creates space to notice the shifts that happen during any meaningful transition. A change in your circumstances, your understanding, your energy, or your sense of what matters most. Sometimes those shifts are external. Sometimes they're internal. Either way, they deserve attention.

What have you learned is perhaps the most generative question of all. Because the learning that happens during a transition is itself a form of progress. It reveals what you need, how you work best, and what you value most. And it shapes every decision that follows.

Through Guided Exploration, our coaching process, VALIDATE creates space for all three questions to be explored with honesty and without judgment. The goal isn't a report card. It's clarity about where you are, what you've built, and what the next chapter calls for.

VALIDATE in Action: Workplace Transition Coaching at Work

VALIDATE has two movements — and both matter.

The first is celebration. This one gets skipped more than it should. In the urgency of transitions, people tend to move from one challenge to the next without pausing to acknowledge what they've actually accomplished. But those wins — the boundary set with clarity, the difficult conversation navigated well, the decision made from values rather than fear — deserve to be recognized. Acknowledging them isn't indulgent. It's energizing. It builds the belief in your own ability to succeed that carries you into the next pursuit with greater confidence and momentum.

The second is adjustment. When something isn't working — when the energy has shifted, when a decision made earlier no longer fits, when experience has revealed something the plan didn't anticipate — VALIDATE creates the structure to address that honestly. Not as failure. As information.

Success in this phase looks like alignment, not perfection. It looks like a path that continues to reflect who you are and the willingness to refine it when it doesn't.

VALIDATE in Action: Matthew's Story

Matthew was thriving by every visible measure. High-performing, well-liked, trusted by his peers. When his company invited him into a fast-track management training program, it looked like the natural next step.

But when we sat down in coaching, he said something that stayed with me:

"I should be motivated by this opportunity. Instead I feel tired and overwhelmed."

And then, more quietly: "In the past I was ready to start a new day and actually looked forward to going to work. Now I dread Monday mornings."

This is where VALIDATE does its most important work. Not at the end of a journey, but when experience begins to reveal something the plan didn't anticipate.

We moved past what Matthew thought he should feel and into what he was actually experiencing. And what emerged was honest and important: while Matthew had the skills to lead, he wasn't energized by the responsibilities that management typically brings. He particularly didn't like making difficult decisions that negatively affected people he cared about.

What energized him most wasn't supervision. It was connection. Encouragement. Helping the people around him grow.

VALIDATE gave him the space to name that clearly and to make a powerful, intentional choice as a result. He stepped off the management track and into a different kind of leadership: mentoring colleagues, facilitating growth circles, becoming a trusted resource for the people around him.

Leadership, he discovered, didn't have to mean managing. It could mean walking alongside others and helping them find their way.

That realization didn't come from the original plan. It came from experience — from moving, noticing, and being willing to adjust.

That's what VALIDATE makes possible.

For Leaders and Organizations: VALIDATE at Scale

Organizations need VALIDATE as much as individuals do.

In the pressure of execution, leadership teams tend to move from one initiative to the next without pausing to ask what the last one actually taught them. Decisions get made without the benefit of what experience has already revealed. Patterns that could inform strategy get lost in the urgency of what's next.

VALIDATE at the organizational level is the discipline of building reflection into the rhythm of progress. Not as a bureaucratic review process, but as a genuine question asked regularly and honestly: What is working, what has changed, and what have we learned?

Organizations that practice this tend to accumulate wisdom rather than just activity. Their strategies become more refined over time. Their people feel seen because their experience is being taken seriously, not just their output.

The Change Stability Model™ supports this work at the organizational level. It helps leaders build the reflective practices that keep direction clear, strategy coherent, and decisions grounded, even as conditions continue to change.

The Journey Doesn't End Here

VALIDATE doesn't mean you've arrived. It means you're ready to move forward with greater clarity than you had before.

Because growth doesn't happen on a fixed schedule. You'll return to these questions when circumstances shift, when new opportunities emerge, when something in your energy or your direction signals that it's time to look up again.

That's not a sign of instability. It's a sign of ownership — of a life and a career actively shaped rather than passively experienced.

Over time, the ability to reflect honestly on your progress, celebrate what's working, and adjust with confidence becomes one of the most valuable things you carry out of this process. Not a destination reached. A capability built.
