CHOOSE: Turning Insight Into Direction in Workplace Transition Coaching

A hand placing a checkmark block beside a human figure on wooden blocks, representing intentional decision-making and the CHOOSE phase of workplace transition coaching in the ACTIV™ framework.
When values are clear, choices become more legible — the CHOOSE phase of the ACTIV™ framework helps you move from insight to intentional direction.

One Client's Journey — Part 2: CHOOSE

Where We Left Off

Aneesh didn't come to coaching with a plan. He came with anger.

His company had restructured in a way that felt like a betrayal, not just of him, but of everyone who had built their careers around a culture they believed in. In the ACCESS phase, instead of rushing toward solutions, we slowed down. We followed the anger to what was underneath it: grief, disappointment and a set of values. Integrity, trust and transparency were the values Aneesh had always lived by but had never stopped to name.

That naming changed everything.

By the time Aneesh completed ACCESS, the fog had begun to lift. He could see his experience clearly and honestly, not through nostalgia or bitterness. And he was ready to ask the next question: What do I actually do with this clarity?

That's where CHOOSE begins.

Decisions Are Easier When Values Are Clear

Most people experience decision-making during transitions as overwhelming.

Too many options. Too much uncertainty. Too many voices offering opinions about what you should do next.

Does this sound familiar?

But the difficulty rarely comes from having too many choices. It comes from trying to decide before you know what really matters.

For Aneesh, that problem no longer existed. He knew his values. He had named them, examined them, and tested them against his experience. And that clarity changed the nature of every decision in front of him, including the hardest one.

The First and Hardest Choice

Before Aneesh could think about new roles or career paths, he had to make a far more difficult decision: to leave.

It wasn't easy. His company had been his professional home for years. There was history, familiarity, and the comfort of routines built over time. But the restructuring wasn't clean or kind.

The notices came in waves. The offers were inconsistent. Some employees were given severance, others a chance to stay under new conditions, and many were left in painful limbo. Aneesh was offered a position. But by then, something was clear: staying would mean continuing to operate in an environment that contradicted the values he had just spent weeks clarifying.

Aneesh wasn't only navigating his own uncertainty. He was grieving for his colleagues too. He was grieving for the friends who had built their lives around the same culture, mission, and the same sense of community. That's the unspoken reality of organizational change: it's rarely just professional. It's personal and emotional. A mix of loyalty, loss, and the ache of watching others go through something difficult.

Choosing to walk away wasn't about escape. It was about alignment.

His values made the answer clear. He chose to go — not out of panic, but out of principle.

That's what ACCESS made possible: the ability to use self-knowledge to make a decision he could stand behind, even when it was difficult.

ACTIV™: A Framework for Workplace Transitions

The ACTIV™ model supports individuals, leaders, and organizations through change with clarity and purpose. It includes five phases:

  • ACCESS – Surface your values, motivations, and deeper goals to uncover what truly matters.

  • CHOOSE – Make intentional decisions that reflect who you are and where you want to go.

  • TAILOR – Shape a path that fits your unique strengths and circumstances.

  • IMPLEMENT – Take action with clarity and confidence, putting your chosen path into motion.

  • VALIDATE – Reflect on progress, celebrate wins, and refine the plan to stay aligned with your goals.

Every ACTIV™ phase builds on the last. CHOOSE is where the clarity of ACCESS becomes direction.

How Workplace Transition Coaching Turns Insight Into Direction

With the decision to leave behind him, the CHOOSE phase opened into something broader.

This is where the deeper question surfaced. The question wasn't "What should I do next?" but "What am I actually choosing between?"

For Aneesh, that question led somewhere unexpected. Not to a list of job titles or industries, but to a more fundamental examination: what had his experience already been telling him about where he would thrive?

Through Guided Exploration, we reflected on his past roles:

  • What had consistently energized him?

  • What had drained him, regardless of the role or the company?

  • What was always present when he felt at his best?

One pattern surfaced again and again: Aneesh thought in systems. He was energized by structure, drawn to process improvement, and at his best when there was a framework to work within and contribute to making better. He thrived when complexity could be organized into something clear, when moving parts could be coordinated into something that worked.

That wasn't just a professional preference. It was a strength. It was a strength that had been present throughout his career, whether or not it had ever been named.

What Decision Aligns With Who You Are?

This is where CHOOSE becomes personal.

For Aneesh, the answer was emerging. Project Management. It was a field grounded in structure, coordination, and systems thinking. Project management aligned with how he naturally worked. It wasn't the obvious next step based on his resume. It was the right next step based on who he was.

He moved forward. His decision was made from clarity — not out of panic or pressure. His decision was based on what he now understood about himself: his values, his strengths, and the kind of work that would allow him to bring his best.

"Now I understand my values," he had said in ACCESS, "I see everything differently."

In CHOOSE, he proved it.

A Key Insight From This Phase

The CHOOSE phase is the intersection of what was, what could be, and what you want to become.

It's where the self-knowledge of ACCESS meets the possibilities of the future. Its where the path forward begins to take shape as a direction grounded in clarity and chosen with intention.

When values and possibilities meet, something shifts. The options that once felt overwhelming begin to sort themselves. The path that's right for you begins to come into focus.

Final Thoughts

Aneesh's CHOOSE journey wasn't linear. It moved through grief, through a difficult decision, and through honest reflection about what his experience had been telling him all along.

It was grounded in the values named in ACCESS. It was grounded in Aneesh's willingness to sit with the hard questions and trust that clarity could guide what came next.

That's what workplace transition coaching makes possible in this phase. Not a checklist of next steps. A process of deciding from clarity so that when you move, you move in a direction you can stand behind.

The heart of the message remains the same: when values and possibilities meet, the path forward begins to emerge.
